Over the last several years you've probably heard the term "man cave" being used more and more to describe an area of the house designated specifically for the male who lives in the house. This area could be an extra room or garage, or even the shed out back. This space is meant for the man to use as a refuge from his everyday life.
It could be an important tease in a marriage for a man to be able to escape the pressures from his wife, kids or just general tension of any kind. Getting away by himself to recharge is all that is needed. The place he chooses can be made to suit his own tastes, holding things that make him happy and bring him a measure of peace.
Long ago (and still today in some areas of the world) young boys lived with the women in the women's area until they reached puberty. Once a boy reached sexual maturity, he would undergo various forms of tests or rites of passage in order to earn his way into becoming a man deserving of being allowed into the men's area.
Men and women are different, as it is well known, but wanting to get away is not only felt by male creatures. The ladies may have that same desire after a hard day of dragging kids all over creation, cooking, cleaning and performing all the other things a wife and mother must do.
This is not to say that women are always excluded from these caves. It's just a space for the man to call his own, hang out with friends and do what he wants. If he makes a mess, its his to clean up. These rooms or area can be used specifically for parties, filled with all the latest high-tech electronics, games and sound systems, or it may be a simple room used for him to relax in.
There are shows on television that devote themselves to creating the most unique and amazing man caves a person could ever imagine. Some of these shows guide in ways of doing it yourself, others simply show off the caves that are already being enjoyed by the lucky men who dwell in them.
If tracing the roots of why you may feel the need to have this kind of dwelling is not your thing, you may want to forget the reasons and just hop in the car and head to the nearest hobby store. Whatever your unique taste and interests are, these are the things that should fill your cave.
Even a man who has to pinch pennies to make it to the end of the month ahead of the zero balance in the checkbook can find a way to gather his thoughts and feelings in a little privacy. Maybe he could turn an extra bathroom, even, into a little piece of pure solitude with a bit of ingenuity. The 'seat' is there, now just make it comfortable.
